| The Advanced Design Institute
(ADi) works to facilitate a deeper and broader understanding of
design as activity and culture. Design activity is the way individuals
and organizations continuously create our world. Design culture
provides the societal context that supports design activity. In
a time of dramatic change and of increased complexity, design culture
is more timely and crucial than ever. The purpose of ADi is to advance
design culture through public education. Traditional approaches
to planned change do not adequately support efforts to improve the
human condition.
While such traditions as science and art are important in the development
of effective strategies for change, these traditions focus on limited
aspects of human experience that do not represent the full richness
of life. The design tradition is a culture of inquiry and action
that takes a more inclusive approach to facilitating purposeful
change in the world.
To design is to co-create the world. It is a creation story in
which everyone participates. Design gives rise to everything from
our tools to our cosmologies. Design is a common and fundamental
human activity with enormous consequences. However, an effective
design tradition that fosters good design depends on the presence
of an advanced design culture.
Designing requires a nurturing environment—a design culture.
Such an environment forms a social container within which the frontiers
and prospects of designing are defined and protected. Design activity
requires the enabling presence of a design culture that defines
its possibilities and boundaries. Design culture creates a supportive
environment that provides the space and freedom necessary to foster
a robust design process that is powerful and vulnerable at the same
time. The goal of ADi is to advocate and facilitate establishing
such an essential design culture.
