Understanding Advanced Design

Updated September 2000

The conceptual model above visualizes our understanding of Advanced Design, as the synthesis between science (universal principles) and design (creation of the unique). Advanced Design is the thinking and the skills based on: Diathenic Graphologue, Creativity/Innovation, Judgment, Systems Thinking.

ADVANCED DESIGN

"Perhaps the most salient differentiation between scientific or artistic thinking and design thinking is that the purpose of design is not to describe or explain what exists in the modality of self expression but to create what does not exist on behalf of another through other expression. This point is critical in the understanding of design."

  • Harold Nelson, "The Necessity of Being 'Un-Disciplined' and 'Out of Control' : Design Action and Systems Thinking", from Performance Improvement Quarterly, 7 (3).

Advanced Design is a synthesis of two traditions: Science and the traditional design professions. This synthesis includes both and transcends each in significant ways. Advanced Design embraces and includes: Intention, Service, Leadership and Design Intelligence.

  • Intention is based on will or volition directed towards purposeful change in the world.
  • Service is the facilitation of change on behalf of other's intentions.
  • Leadership is a quality of the service relationship between designers and clients.
  • Design Intelligence is a comprehensive intellectual capacity that animates human intention.
